Warm Moon Rising

She bends and twists,
eons of time
woven into her gnarled branches.

After centuries, life still flows through her roots
from the living ground,
feeding and nourishing every cell.

In turn, she gives succor to the small ones
who lodge in her branches, feast on her leaves.
Who live and die in an instant.

She has seen so much over the centuries.
Borne all, stood solid and strong
through war, famine, flood and drought.

The foolishness of men has passed her by.
She has witnessed birth,
and death, greed and generosity.

She knows these are passing things;
that foolishness begets its own end
and she will be there, still standing.

On this summer night,
she turns her face to the light
on the evening horizon.

And once again embraces the warm moon rising,
an old friend warming and blessing her
in loving benediction.
